MKDC Audition Guide (2026)
1. Choosing Your Audition Path
MKDC holds auditions twice a year. We highly recommend attending these in person as the bar for online entry is significantly higher.
Semi-Annual On-Site Auditions (Recommended): Held twice a year in the Spring and Fall. This is the best way to showcase your skills and personality to the leadership team.
Online Submissions (High Difficulty): Technically open year-round. This path is much more difficult to clear than the on-site auditions. It serves as a strict preliminary filter for a private invitation.
MKDC Academy (Ongoing Recruitment): We actively recruit from our Academy classes. This allows the leadership to see your work ethic, growth, and teamwork over a longer period.
2. The Online Audition Process
Because the online path is harder to pass, your submission must meet professional technical standards.
Video Quality: If the video, image, or audio quality is poor, MKDC will not proceed with the application.
Camera Placement: Do not place your camera on the ground. The camera should be placed at table level (chest/eye level) to provide a clear, undistorted view of your movements.
Visuals: Your full body must be visible in the frame at all times (no cut-off feet or hands). Ensure the lighting is bright and the music is clear.
Multiple Attempts: We value growth! You are allowed to submit multiple videos multiple times. If you don't pass the first time, you are encouraged to refine your technique and try again.
The Private Callback: Only those who pass the video screening will be invited to a private on-site audition at our studio.
3. What to Expect at On-Site Auditions
When attending our semi-annual or private on-site auditions, please be prepared for the following process:
Registration: Arrive at least 20 minutes early to register with your full name, birth date, and email. You will receive an audition number at this time.
Group Warm-Up: You will have time to warm up alongside current MKDC members and other auditionees.
Group Learning Piece: You will be taught a choreography snippet as a group and must perform it immediately after learning.
Solo Performance: You must perform a prepared solo piece for a panel of MKDC board members and other auditionees.
Length: Your solo must be between 0:45 and 1:20 total.
Selection: Pick a song that showcases your strengths; medleys of both "Boy Group" and "Girl Group" styles are encouraged if you want to show versatility.
Recording: Both your group and solo performances will be recorded for reviewing purposes.
4. Eligibility & Membership Rules
Location: Residents of the greater Twin Cities area with reliable transportation only.
Exclusivity: MKDC does not allow dual memberships with other dance teams.
Fees: Approximately $50/month (for facility/training) + personal outfit costs.
5. Core Evaluation Criteria
We aren't just looking for "finished" dancers. We look for potential and character:
Hard Work: Consistency and discipline.
Teamwork: The ability to sync and collaborate with others.
Growth Mindset: Staying positive and open to feedback. Attitude impacts audition results as much as skill.
